Speaker Bio
James has more than 18 years’ experience working in Energy & Climate science, covering a wide range of topics including GHG emissions accounting, buildings decarbonisation, clean technology innovation and climate science. He recently joined Ricardo, where he is developing their work on climate risk with a focus on supporting clients understand the potential physical risks posed to assets, operations and supply chains by a changing climate. James’ is particularly interested in how to bring together the scientific community, decision-makers, and those working on the ground in the organisations who need to build resilience – without input from all of these groups, action to build resilience will not be possible, but all 3 approach the problem from a different angle and understand concepts in different ways. James is also interested in the limitations of climate data, the scale of uncertainty in climate projections, and how decisions to adapt can be made given these limitations.
Prior to joining Ricardo James worked the UK Government where he led in a variety of roles, including as a UNFCCC negotiator, and Government scientist at IPCC meetings. He has experience of co-chairing IPCC working groups and bringing sides together on contested topics. As former Government Lead for the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme, the UK’s Flagship Climate Science Programme, he is equally adept at dealing with Climate Scientists, Policymakers, and external Stakeholders.
