Abyd Karmali is a Managing Director, ESG Advisory at Bank of America based in London.

From 2007-2014, he served as Merrill Lynch’s (subsequently BofAML) Global Head of Carbon Markets. In 2014, he became part of the team supporting the bank’s broader capital deployment commitment to mobilise $1.5 trillion in sustainable finance by 2030.

He has worked for more than 30 years on climate change and sustainable finance and was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for these efforts in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for 2019. In June 2022, Financial News included Abyd its in inaugural list of “The 50 Most Influential in Sustainable Finance.”

Before joining the financial sector in 2007, he was a partner in a management consulting firm in Washington DC, Toronto and London where he advised companies on their climate strategy and also spent two years with the United Nations Environment Programme in Paris as Energy and Climate Change Programme Officer. From 2013 to 2015, Mr. Karmali was selected to serve as one of two inaugural private sector representatives to the Board of the UN Green Climate Fund in Songdo, South Korea.

His current external advisory roles include the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, and co-chair of the Sustainable Finance Working Group for the International Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Judging Panel for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the Board of the International Emissions Trading Association and on the National Committee for NGO the Aga Khan Foundation (UK). He holds an MS in Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
