Karen leads the scientific research programme at the FCA, where she has also built an Economic & Social Data Science function for the regulator. Her teams integrate economics, behavioural science and data science to uncover how financial markets work, detect and diagnose risks to consumers and market functioning, and inform and evaluate regulatory interventions. Some of their work investigates opportunities and risks from AI to shape the regulatory approach to digital markets.

Before joining the FCA Karen worked for McKinsey & Co. as a strategy consultant in Europe and the US. She also led data science teams at QuantumBlack. Her early career was focused on academic research as a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at the University of Oxford, specialising in game theory and applied econometrics. She serves on the advisory board for the Social Data Science Masters and PhD programs at Oxford and is an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham and Non-Executive Director at FinRegLab.
