"There are lots of conferences on AI at the moment, but City & Financial Global's AI Regulation Summit last week was fantastic. Some of my highlights:

- hearing from Kai Zenner about the current debates on the latest draft of the EU AI Act
- hearing from Reggie Babin about the US approach to tackling AI regulation
- hearing from the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum, the ICO, the CMA and the FCA about the UK's "pro-innovation", principles-led AI regulatory collaboration."

Talk about existential risk of AI was happily left for the coffee break, and we discussed the need for interdisciplinary approach to address the AI control challenge. You see me in the attached talking to our visualisation of these layers of control.

This collaboration across departments in the company will require that as a community we develop a shared understanding of the issue at hand, and a shared vocabulary to talk about it. This will take time (as it is a good old human activity... ). We better get going."

"Terrific day today. Not just in the here and now but unexpected recall of first hand experience of derivative regulation, market crashes and portfolio insurance in the 80’s, the 2008 crash, reviewing Defra’s horizon scanning and foresight programme in the mid noughties, even family autobiography around the scramble to do air nuclear testing before it would be banned in the late 1950’s (Grapple tests for the UK.) Marinading. But meanwhile very grateful to be here with such great speakers and conversations in the break. The intersection of AI and the financial services space has been one of the hot-button issues of the past few years, and now all eyes are on the topic of AI regulation. Google has an extensive history of producing AI-aided applications like Maps and Translate and is sticking to its guns on the importance of the technology even when confronted by concerns that unchecked AI usage could spin out into something reminiscent of films like The Terminator."
