Matthew Townsend is a Partner and Global Co-Head of the International Trade and Regulatory Law Group at Allen & Overy. Matt has over 25 years of experience advising financial institutions and corporates alike on economic and trade sanctions, export controls and wider strategic-level trade and regulatory issues such as, WTO rules, FDI regimes, anti-bribery compliance (on and off deal) and anti-money laundering programmes.
Matt regularly advises on sanctions and export controls issues in the context of M&A transactions, joint ventures, debt and equity raisings and listings. He works closely with a range of clients on developing internal compliance programmes and training covering sanctions. He has extensive experience of leading complex cross-border sanctions and wider compliance reviews, often coordinating broad multi-jurisdictional teams.
In recent months, Matt and his team have advised a wide variety of clients on the rapidly moving UK and EU Russian sanctions regimes and on new national security considerations.
He is widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading regulatory lawyers.
