Summary

City & Financial Global is delighted to announce its forthcoming Summit on the Future of UK Retail Investment taking place on 21 April. The Summit follows the success of our Reform of the UK Capital Markets Summit last October, at which there was a great deal of discussion on how to develop a retail investment culture which provides returns for investors, liquidity for companies and boosts economic growth.

The Summit has been timed to coincide with the launch of the Government’s Retail Investment Campaign in April. This represents the most concerted campaign since the 1980s to encourage the British public to use the cash in their bank accounts to invest in the UK economy. The Summit will address how the regulator can encourage responsible risk-taking and look at the meaning of “targeted support” for retail financial institutions. Other developments which will contribute to encouraging greater retail participation in the capital markets include the Mills Review on the future of AI in financial services and the proposed changes to client categorisation.

Issues to be addressed

  • HM Treasury’s reasons for launching the campaign and what they are hoping to achieve
  • The FCA’s view on how regulation can help promote responsible risk taking
  • The practical implications for financial institutions of providing “targeted support” and their duties to consumers
  • Changing the risk-averse mindset of UK retail customers by rebuilding trust and engagement
  • Designing new products for the mass market beyond basic ISAs
