The drive to establish the UK as a leading centre for AI is a critical part of the government’s growth strategy.

On the 9th of June the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced £1bn of extra funding in AI, £187 to tech school-aged children AI skills, and a partnership with the tech sector to upskill 7.5 million workers by 2030.  Those actions are a part of the process to implement the UK Government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, published in January 2025 and led by Matt Clifford to boost the UK's AI sector and make it global leader.  The Action Plan focuses on three core goals: “ Invest in the foundations of AI”, “Push hard on cross-economy AI adoption” and “Position the UK to be an AI maker, not an AI taker”.  While the Government’s intentions are clear, the success of the UK AI policy developments depends on swift and coordinated action by regulators, government and both the private and public sector.
